How to Help

Love Bluebirds?
Here Are Ways You Can Help

All the people involved with Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project are volunteers. The ability of the Project to accomplish its mission depends on the work of these volunteers and donations from  concerned individuals and organizations.

Become a Monitor

We recruit new volunteer nest box monitors at our Spring Meeting, usually in late February. We host a public informational meeting where we talk about the birds, monitoring and collecting data, training, and more. To learn more about nest box monitoring, read our FAQs. Visit our Events page for information about our next Spring meeting.

Host your Own
Bluebird Nest Box

Are you interested in hosting your own nest box?
Here are 3 considerations:

Habitat

Is your property suitable for nesting bluebirds?

Bluebirds need open areas with short vegetation for foraging and scattered trees for perching. We choose locations that do not use pesticides.

Predators

What predators might bluebirds face on your property?

Nest box placement must consider predation. Shrubby areas attract aggressive wrens, ponds increase predator risk, livestock draw house sparrows, and outdoor cats are a major threat—so boxes are avoided in these areas.

Monitoring and Maintenance

Are you willing to monitor and maintain the nest box?

We don’t recommend putting up a nest box unless you are willing to monitor and maintain it. Neglected boxes may have unintended consequences that do more harm than good.
